Whether you’re buying a used vehicle registered in Madhya Pradesh, registering a new one, or bringing a vehicle into the state, the details and services you need are available online through the national Parivahan portals with Madhya Pradesh selected. This guide explains how to check MP vehicle registration details, how registration works in the state, and how to handle common situations like transfers and renewals.
Understanding MP Registration Numbers
Every vehicle registered in Madhya Pradesh has a number starting with MP, followed by a two-digit code for the RTO where it was registered, then a series of letters and a four-digit number, for example MP-04-AB-1234, where 04 is Bhopal. The RTO code tells you which office holds the vehicle’s record, which is useful when you need to contact the right office or check that a seller’s documents match. See our MP RTO list for every code and office.
How To Check MP Vehicle Registration Details

You can do the same search in the mParivahan app. For more detail on what the lookup shows, see our guides to vehicle owner details and RC status. Be wary of apps or websites promising full owner details or a complete “history report” for a fee; the official lookup is free and deliberately limits personal information.
Checks Before Buying a Used MP Vehicle
Our vehicle blacklist check guide covers these checks in more depth, including stolen-vehicle searches.
Registering a New Vehicle in Madhya Pradesh

For a new vehicle, the dealer normally handles registration through Vahan. They submit the application (Form 20) with the sale certificate (Form 21), the manufacturer’s compliance certificate (Form 22), your insurance and address proof, and collect the road tax and registration fee. The RTO then allots a permanent MP registration number, and the smart card RC is posted to you and made available in DigiLocker and mParivahan. You can track progress with our registration status guide.
Documents Required
New vehicles come with a valid PUC certificate for the first year, so you don’t need a separate one at registration. See our vehicle registration forms guide for what each form is for.
Road Tax in MP
Private vehicles in Madhya Pradesh usually pay a one-time road tax at registration, calculated mainly on the vehicle’s cost and type, while commercial vehicles pay periodically. Rates are set by the state and revised from time to time, so check the current figure on the Vahan portal or with the dealer before purchase. See our Vahan tax payment guide for how to pay.
Registration Validity and Renewal

A private vehicle’s registration in MP is valid for 15 years, then can be renewed for five years at a time after a fitness inspection; see our RC renewal guide. Commercial vehicles work differently: rather than a fixed registration period, they must hold a valid fitness certificate, which is renewed periodically and more often as the vehicle ages. See our fitness certificate guide.
Transfers, Moving States and Other Services
For an ownership transfer, a change of address or a duplicate RC, use Vahan’s vehicle-related services with Madhya Pradesh selected. If you’re bringing a vehicle into MP from another state for good, you’ll need an NOC from the original state and then re-register it with an MP number; a vehicle kept in a new state for more than 12 months must be re-registered there.
