“Maha Parivahan” is the name people commonly use for Maharashtra’s transport services, run by the state’s Motor Vehicles Department. In practice, most of these services are not on a separate state portal: driving licence work runs through the national Sarathi system and vehicle work through Vahan, with Maharashtra selected as the state. This guide explains where to go for each service, the main steps for licences and registration, and how challans and fancy numbers work in Maharashtra.

Documents To Keep Ready
Having scans of the right documents ready before you start saves you from abandoning an application halfway through. For licence services, you’ll typically need proof of age (such as a birth certificate, PAN card or school leaving certificate), proof of your current Maharashtra address (such as Aadhaar, a passport, a utility bill or a registered rent agreement), a recent passport-size photo and your signature. Applicants aged 40 or above, and those applying for commercial licences, also need a medical certificate in Form 1A from a registered doctor. For vehicle services, keep your RC, valid insurance, PUC certificate and, where relevant, a financier’s NOC to hand. Scan documents clearly and keep them within the file size the portal allows, since blurry or oversized uploads are a common reason for rejection.

Registering a Vehicle in Maharashtra
For a new vehicle, the dealer normally handles registration through Vahan: they submit the sale documents, insurance and PUC, and collect the road tax, and the RTO issues a permanent registration number. If you’re taking delivery before the permanent number is issued, the dealer can arrange a temporary registration, which is valid for one month. Paying Road Tax

Traffic Challans and Fancy Numbers

If you want a particular registration number, such as a round or repeating number, you can search for available numbers and book one online through Vahan’s fancy number service by paying the set fee. Popular numbers may go to auction. Booking has to be done before the vehicle is registered.
