Vahan 4.0 Application Status (2026): Check Application, Payment & Appointment Online

Last updated: September 2026 – checked against the current Vahan 4.0 citizen services portal.

Vahan 4.0 is the current version of India’s national vehicle registration system, run by the National Informatics Centre (NIC) for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Its citizen services portal is where you apply for vehicle-related services and then track them: the application’s progress, whether your payment went through, your RTO appointment, and the receipts and forms you’ll need. This guide walks through each of these status checks and what to do when something goes wrong.

What Is Vahan 4.0?

Earlier versions of Vahan ran separately in each state, which made interstate transfers and lookups slow. Vahan 4.0 moved registration records onto a single, centralised web-based platform used by RTOs across the country, so a vehicle’s record can be accessed and updated wherever it’s needed. For vehicle owners, this means services such as ownership transfer, change of address, duplicate RC, NOC and road tax can all be started online at vahan.parivahan.gov.in. For an overview of all the services, see our Vahan e-services guide.

How To Check Your Vahan 4.0 Application Status

  • Step 1: Go to https://vahan.parivahan.gov.in and open Online Services → Vehicle Related Services.
  • Step 2: Choose Know Your Application Status from the status options.
  • Step 3: Enter the application number from your receipt and the captcha.
  • Step 4: The result shows each stage of the application, such as fee paid, verification, approval and dispatch, and whether any stage is pending.

If you’ve lost the application number, it’s printed on the payment receipt and usually sent by SMS to your registered mobile number. For licence applications, which run on Sarathi rather than Vahan, see our Parivahan application status guide.

Checking a Payment That Didn’t Go Through

Checking a Vahan payment transaction status

One of the most common problems on Vahan is a payment that’s deducted from your bank but not reflected on the portal, often because the session timed out before the bank confirmed. Before paying again, check the transaction status:

  • Step 1: In Vehicle Related Services, look for the option to check or verify a pending or failed transaction (the exact label varies slightly by state).
  • Step 2: Enter your registration number or the transaction or application number.
  • Step 3: The portal checks with the payment gateway. If the payment is confirmed, the application moves forward and you can print the receipt; if it failed, the amount is usually refunded to your account.

Wait a few hours after a failed payment before checking, since bank confirmations can lag. If the status still doesn’t update after a day or two, contact your bank with the transaction reference and the Parivahan helpdesk. For how to pay road tax and other fees, see our Vahan tax payment guide.

Booking and Rescheduling RTO Appointments

Some Vahan services still need a visit to the RTO, for example a vehicle inspection for an interstate re-registration or document verification for a transfer. After you apply and pay, the portal lets you book an appointment slot at your RTO. If you can’t make it, you can usually reschedule through the same appointment section using your application number. Take printouts of the application, receipt and original documents to the appointment.

Printing Receipts and Forms

Vahan 4.0 generates the forms for each service from the details you enter, so you rarely need to download blank forms. After applying, you can print the application form, the fee receipt and, for some services, the approved document from the print options in Vehicle Related Services. Keep these until the service is complete. See our vehicle registration forms guide for what each form is for.

Raising a Complaint

Parivahan complaint and grievance section

If an application is stuck well beyond the usual time, or you spot an error in your record, you can raise a grievance through Parivahan and track it with the complaint number you’re given. For faster help, email the Vahan helpdesk with your application or registration number and screenshots of any error. If the problem still isn’t resolved, you can escalate through the government’s CPGRAMS grievance portal. Our helpline guide lists the official contacts.

Tips for Using Vahan 4.0

Keep the mobile number registered with your vehicle active, since most services send an OTP to it. Use a desktop browser if the site misbehaves on your phone, and don’t press back during payment. Always go to vahan.parivahan.gov.in directly rather than following links from unknown websites, since look-alike sites exist.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Vahan 4.0 still in beta?

No. Vahan 4.0 is the live national system used by RTOs across the country; the “beta” label from its early rollout no longer applies.

My payment was deducted but Vahan shows it as pending. Should I pay again?

No. Check the transaction status first. Paying twice can leave you chasing a refund for the second payment.

Can I check a driving licence application on Vahan?

No. Licence applications are handled by Sarathi, which has its own status check.

Do I need an account to use Vahan 4.0?

Most services only need your registration number, chassis number details and an OTP. Some states offer an optional login for tracking multiple applications.
