Last updated: September 2026 – checked against the current Vahan duplicate RC service and the Central Motor Vehicles Rules.
If your vehicle’s Registration Certificate (RC) has been lost, stolen, or damaged so badly it can’t be read, you can apply to the RTO for a duplicate. The duplicate carries the same registration number and details as the original and is just as valid. This guide explains when you need one, how to apply online or at the RTO, the documents and fees involved, and how long it takes.
What Is a Duplicate RC and When Do You Need One?
A duplicate RC is a replacement copy of your original registration certificate, issued by the RTO where the vehicle is registered. You need one when the original is:
If you only need something to show at a traffic check while you wait, keep a digital copy in DigiLocker or mParivahan; see our guide to downloading your RC. But some RTO services, and many buyers if you sell the vehicle, will still want the physical card, so it’s worth getting the duplicate.

Applying at the RTO
You can also apply in person at the RTO where the vehicle is registered. Collect Form 26 there (or download it), fill it in, attach the documents below, pay the fee at the counter, and keep the receipt. The RTO may give you a date for verification of the vehicle.

Duplicate RC Fees
Under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, the fee for a duplicate RC is half the registration fee for that vehicle class. The base fees work out as follows:
| Vehicle class | Duplicate RC fee (₹) |
|---|---|
| Invalid carriage | 25 |
| Motorcycle | 150 |
| Light motor vehicle, non-transport (private car) | 300 |
| Light motor vehicle, transport | 500 |
| Medium goods or passenger vehicle | 500 |
| Heavy goods or passenger vehicle | 750 |
| Imported motorcycle | 1,250 |
| Any other vehicle | 1,500 |
| Imported motor vehicle | 2,500 |
Smart card charges and online service fees are added on top in most states, so the total you pay will be higher than the base fee. The portal shows the exact amount before you pay.
Checking Status and Processing Time

Track your application on Vahan using Know Your Application Status and your application number; see our application status guide. A duplicate RC typically takes a few weeks to be printed and posted, depending on the RTO’s workload and whether a vehicle inspection is needed. Once approved, the digital RC in DigiLocker or mParivahan works in the meantime.
Tips To Avoid Delays
File the police report as soon as you notice the RC is missing, since a delay can raise questions, especially if the vehicle is later involved in an incident. Clear any pending e-challans and make sure your insurance and PUC are valid before applying. If you’ve moved house, apply for a change of address at the same time so the duplicate is posted to the right place. If you find the original RC after the duplicate is issued, hand the original back to the RTO, since only one valid RC should exist.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the duplicate RC fee for a bike?
The base fee is ₹150, half the motorcycle registration fee. Smart card and service charges are added, so the total is usually higher.
Do I need a police report for a damaged RC?
No. A police report is only needed if the RC was lost or stolen. For a damaged RC, you surrender the damaged card with your application.
Can I sell my vehicle without the original RC?
It’s much easier with a physical RC. Many buyers and RTOs expect it for an ownership transfer, so apply for the duplicate first.
Can I apply at a different RTO?
The duplicate is issued by the RTO where the vehicle is registered, though with an online application you usually only need to visit if verification is required.
