For years, Telangana was one of the few states that ran its own separate IT system for driving licences and vehicle registration, instead of the national Sarathi and Vahan portals. That has now changed. Telangana moved its licence services to Sarathi in 2025, and its vehicle services to Vahan from 15 March 2026. This guide explains what “Parivahan Telangana” means today, where to go for each service, and what the switch means for vehicle owners.
What Changed in Telangana
Under its old standalone system, Telangana’s vehicle records weren’t linked to the national database. That caused real problems for anyone moving a vehicle between states or buying a used vehicle registered elsewhere, often meaning repeated RTO visits and manual verification. With the move to Vahan, Telangana’s vehicle records now sit in the same national register as every other state, so interstate transfers, NOCs and vehicle lookups work the same way they do elsewhere in India.
Existing registration numbers didn’t change with the switch. Services such as change of owner or address, duplicate RC, and adding or removing hypothecation for a vehicle loan are now handled through Vahan. Telangana also announced in October 2025 that it was abolishing its road transport check posts, alongside joining the national platforms.

Driving Licence Services in Telangana
Telangana’s licence services now run on Sarathi. The service was piloted at the Trimulgherry RTO in Secunderabad and rolled out across all Hyderabad RTOs in August 2025, before being extended statewide.

Documents To Keep Ready
Having clear scans ready before you start makes the online process much smoother. For licence services, keep proof of age (such as a birth certificate, PAN card or school certificate), proof of your current Telangana address (such as Aadhaar, a passport, a utility bill or a registered rent agreement), a recent photo and your signature, and a medical certificate in Form 1A if you’re 40 or older or applying for a commercial licence. For vehicle services, keep your RC, valid insurance, PUC certificate, and a financier’s NOC if the vehicle has or had a loan. Make sure the mobile number linked to your Aadhaar is active, since most steps rely on OTP verification.

To check a Telangana vehicle’s details, use the national lookup rather than an old state search page:
For services on your own vehicle, such as ownership transfer, a duplicate RC, or a NOC to move the vehicle to another state, use Vahan’s vehicle-related services with Telangana selected. New vehicles are normally registered by the dealer through Vahan.
Buying or Selling a Used Vehicle in Telangana
The move to Vahan makes second-hand deals simpler and safer. Before buying, look the vehicle up on Know Your Vehicle Details to confirm the RC is active, check whether a bank is listed as financier, and search for pending e-challans, since unpaid fines stay with the vehicle rather than the seller. Also make sure the chassis and engine numbers on the vehicle match the RC. If you’re selling, file the transfer promptly: until the RC is in the buyer’s name, you remain the registered owner and any challans or legal issues involving the vehicle can come back to you. If the vehicle is registered in another state, the buyer can now complete the NOC and re-registration through the standard Vahan process.
TS and TG Registration Numbers
In 2024, Telangana changed its vehicle registration prefix from “TS” to “TG” for newly registered vehicles. Vehicles already registered with a TS number did not need to change their plates; both prefixes are valid. If you’re buying a used Telangana vehicle, you may see either, and both refer to the same state.
E-Challans in Telangana
Telangana’s traffic police, particularly in Hyderabad, make heavy use of cameras to issue e-challans for offences such as not wearing a helmet, signal jumping and wrong parking. Does Telangana still have its own transport portal?
For licence and vehicle services, no. These now run on the national Sarathi and Vahan portals. The Transport Department’s website still carries notices, fees and office details.
Did my vehicle’s registration number change when Telangana joined Vahan?
No. Existing registration numbers stayed the same; only the system holding the record changed.
Is my old Telangana RC still valid after the switch?
Yes. An RC issued under the old state system remains valid until its normal expiry. You only deal with Vahan when you next need a service, such as renewal, transfer or a duplicate.
Is it now easier to move a Telangana vehicle to another state?
Yes. Because the record is in the national database, the NOC and re-registration in another state follow the standard Vahan process instead of needing manual verification.
